There are so many fun ways to celebrate your pregnancy like a professional maternity photo session, getting a belly cast made or taking your own belly photos each week. Having a henna tattoo done is another way to remember such a special time. I’ve always been fascinated by henna tattoos so I set up a model session with a local artist to see what it’s all about. My pregnant friend, Sara, volunteered to be our model for the day.
I invited Jennifer Montgomery from CrazyFaces Face Painting to show us the process.
First, Jennifer uses eucalyptus oil on the skin before applying the henna to make it last longer. The henna she uses is natural brown henna and contains no PPD.
Next, you choose your design. You can even incorporate your baby’s name or nursery theme into the design.
Jennifer applied the henna to Sara’s belly and hands. This took about 45 minutes.
Then, the henna has to dry. The longer the henna is left on, the darker the stain will be on the skin.
TIP: The henna does take a while to dry (over an hour) so be sure to allow extra time for that. We used a fan to help the henna dry a little faster. It also seemed to get darker the longer it was exposed to air.
Once the henna is dried you just flake it off and it turns out like this:
IDEAS FOR YOUR HENNA BELLY TATTOO:
Henna tattoos can last a week or more. So, it might be fun to get this done right before your baby shower or to get your girlfriends’ together for a “henna party”. Of course you could always do this the day before your maternity session so you can incorporate your henna belly into the photos. The henna images could also be used on the invitation for your baby shower or you could have a large photo displayed at the baby shower.
Here are some of the ways we had fun with Sara’s henna’d belly:
Sara was not shy about showing her belly in public, so we headed to a nearby park.
Thanks so much to Sara, our model, who is expecting her little man any day now.
And special thanks to Jennifer Montgomery from CrazyFaces Face Painting. She not only creates henna tattoos but she also does amazing belly painting for pregnancy, kids’ face painting and body airbrushing as well.
